Detail about our bureau Afar Finance Bureau

The Afar Region, located in northeastern Ethiopia, is strategically vital for the nation’s economy due to its natural resources, agricultural potential, and proximity to international borders. Known for the Danakil Depression—one of the hottest and lowest points on Earth—the region is rich in mineral deposits such as potash, salt, and sulfur, essential for Ethiopia’s mining sector and export markets.

A key feature of the region is the Awash River, which supports extensive agricultural activities, including wheat production that is essential to Ethiopia’s food security goals. The river irrigates large areas of farmland, making it possible to cultivate wheat and other staple crops in an otherwise arid environment, thereby contributing significantly to Ethiopia's agricultural growth and food supply.

Additionally, Afar's economy is bolstered by livestock production, a major source of income through domestic and cross-border trade. The region's geographic position also offers access to the Djibouti port, enhancing its role in logistics and transport, which supports broader economic development and revenue generation for Ethiopia
